The Stories of Saint John the Baptist

The right wall is devoted to St. John the Baptist; in the lunette, the Nativity of John the Baptist is depicted in a simple boxed perspective with the inside of the room and
an area with an archway.
In the middle scene, on the uniform background of a rocky hillside landscape, the artist has inserted different episodes in the life of the saint, stretching over an extended period of time; starting from the top right we see the majestic group ( see images) in which St. John takes leave of his parents to go into the desert, where the shapes closing one on the other like the petals of a flower emphasize the pain of the separation; then St. John in prayer (facing an angel holding out the Cross, painted on the dry plaster and now almost completely faded). In the central part, the young Saint giving his blessing, still beardless, precedes the Preaching of John the Baptist.  back >
