The mission
The middle scene, starting from the left, shows Stephen taking his leave of Bishop Giuliano to undertake his mission in Cilicia.
The two figures are very beautiful ( see images), with the luminous Saint who, with touching affection, lays his face on the hand of the bishop, while the clerics with their refined profiles look on. The episode that follows is shown in two scenes: in an atmosphere of mystery a man whispers in the saint's ear that his son is possessed by the devil, and when Stephen frees him of the demon, a dark shadow appears over the exhausted, transparent figure of the youth. The story is framed in a refined classical architecture, to one side of which the life of the saint continues with the Dispute: Stephen expounds his credo before a group of skeptics and scornful listeners with expressive faces.
